NEWS Sustainable Microbiology to run themed collection on water treatment
Applied Microbiology International’s not-for-profit open access journal Sustainable Microbiology is to run a themed collection on ’Eco-Friendly Microbial Technologies for Water Treatment’.
The call for papers has been issued on World Water Day 2024 for a collection which will be dedicated to unearthing and promoting the most innovative, eco-friendly microbial technologies for water treatment.
The editors said: “The quest for clean water and sanitation stands as a critical challenge and an essential target of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation). As global populations grow and climate change impacts intensify, the need for sustainable water treatment solutions becomes more acute. Microbial technologies offer promising pathways to not only address this need but do so in a manner that is in harmony with our planet’s ecosystems.
Cutting-edge
“This special issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research, case studies, and reviews that highlight the power of microbes in transforming water treatment processes. By focusing on environmentally friendly approaches, we contribute to the broader goals of sustainability, resilience, and health.”
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following key themes:
- Innovative Microbial Treatment Processes: Cutting-edge research on new microbial technologies for water purification and wastewater treatment.
- Bioremediation and Pollution Reduction: Studies on the use of microorganisms to degrade, remove, or neutralize pollutants in water bodies.
- Resource Recovery from Wastewater: Explorations into how microbial technologies can facilitate the recovery of valuable resources from wastewater, aligning with circular economy principles.
- Microbial Ecology and Water Systems: Insights into the ecological roles of microorganisms in water systems and their implications for treatment processes.
- Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessments: Analyses of the environmental impact and sustainability of microbial water treatment technologies.
The Associate Editor for this themed collection is Dr Francis Hassard of Cranfield University, United Kingdom, and Guest Editors are Dr Thomas Thompson of Queen’s University Belfast, and Dr Victor Castro-Gutierrez, Universidad de Costa Rica.
The aim of Sustainable Microbiology is to demonstrate the current and future role of microbes in improving global economic, social, and environmental sustainability, by inviting high-quality papers that demonstrate the application of microbiology in the achievement of the UN sustainable development goals.
“By contributing to this special issue, researchers and practitioners will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the field of sustainable water treatment and help advance global efforts towards achieving SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Join us in this critical endeavour to explore and expand the frontiers of eco-friendly microbial technologies for water treatment. Together, we can contribute to a sustainable future, where access to clean water is a reality for all,” the editors said.
